What exactly is Semaglutide and Tirzepatide?

GLP-1 Medications

GLP-1 (aka glucagon-like peptide-1) agonists are a class of medications that can aid in weight loss, but were originally used to treat Diabetes.

How do GLP-1 medications work?

They mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate blood sugar levels and promotes feelings of fullness.

By increasing GLP-1 activity, these medications:

  • Slow down stomach emptying

  • Reduce appetite

  • Stimulate insulin production

  • Increase your feeling of fullness

  • Reduce cravings and “food noise”

Effectiveness

About 42% of American adults are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Medications like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide have taken the world by a storm, effectively changing the game when it comes to weight management. During clinical studies, patients were shown to lose up to 23% of their body weight while taking the medication.

Some other cool facts

GLP-1 drugs are being studied for their other positive side effects, besides weight loss. Some of these studies are looking into GLP-1 positive effects like:

  • Improved heart health

  • Improved kidney function

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Improved brain health

  • Improved mental health

  • Improved sleep apnea

  • Reduced risk of neurocognitive disorders

  • Improved liver health

While at REV we strictly use Semaglutide and Tirzepatide for weight management, it’s interesting to see how they’re being studied around the world.

Frequently asked questions:

  • You have options! You may perform your weekly injections at home, or visit our office to have your medication administered by our team. If you prefer to do it at home, rest assured we’ll show you how.

  • You will have a much smaller appetite than usual, and will likely find that you feel full after eating smaller portions. The medication works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation, so your appetite will decrease over time. You will also experience fewer cravings and less “food noise”.

  • Typically you can resume your injection as normal, but it’s best to check with your practitioner. You may experience that your hunger and food noise are stronger if you skip a week.

  • The medication is generally well-tolerated, with the most common side effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, heartburn, and burping. These effects are typically mild and resolve as your body becomes accustomed to the medication.

  • There are several simple guidelines that you can follow to help prevent nausea:

    • Stay hydrated throughout the day

    • Eat smaller, more frequent meals

    • Avoid greasy or spicy foods

    • Try stomach-soothing teas like ginger

If nausea persists or worsens, call our office about additional options, such as adjusting your dosage.
